Abstract
Some patients with allergic rhinitis develop bronchial asthma, while others do not. To evaluate the role of specific antibodies in development of atopic asthma, we studied specific IgE, and IgG4 antibodies to D. farinae by enzyme-linked
immunosorbent
assay in 67 allergic rhinitis and/or asthma patients. Sera of 26 non-atopic rhinitis and/or asthma patients and 15 cords were used as controls. The subjects were divided into 3 groups according to bronchial reactivity. Group I included 24
asthmatic
patients whose methacholine PC20 was less than 4.66mg/ml. Group II included allergic rhinitis patients whose methacholine PC20 ranged from 4.7 to 25mg/ml. Group III included allergic rhinitis patients without bronchial hyperresponsiveness.
Specific
IgE
level was highest in group I and II, group III in order. There was no significant difference in specific IgG and IgG4 levels among the three groups. No relationship was noted between methacholine PC20 and specific antibodies. Specific IgG was
detected
in 13 of 26 non-atopic rhintis and/or asthma patients, while specific IgE and IgG4 showed little binding activity. It was suggested that specific antibodies might not be associated with development and progression of bronchial reactivity to D.
farinae
and further studies are needed to evaluate the role of specific IgG in pathogenesis of non-atopic asthma.
